Business Culture Starts with the Subconscious

Ask any founder what makes or breaks a business, and “culture” will show up somewhere in the answer.
But business culture isn’t just what you value — it’s what you unconsciously tolerate, reward, or repeat.
After building seven teams across multiple businesses, I’ve learned that if a company’s culture isn’t intentionally created, it’s unconsciously inherited. And often, what’s inherited doesn’t serve the growth you want to see.
Now, as a certified hypnotherapist and entrepreneur, I work with business leaders to address not just the culture of their teams, but the inner patterns driving their decisions. Because real change starts inside the leader, not with a staff handbook.
What Is Business Culture, Really?
Business culture isn’t a list of values pinned to the wall. It’s how you respond to problems, how decisions are made, and how your team feels when they walk through the door or log onto Zoom.
If you’re the business owner, you are the culture driver. The way you lead, react, and communicate defines how things really work. And people can feel when the “why” and the “how” don’t align. That alignment — or lack of it — shapes company culture more than any written mission statement ever could.
How Your Subconscious Shapes Company Culture
Research shows that up to 95% of what we do is driven by the subconscious. That includes the habits you default to, the stories you tell yourself, and the fears operating quietly in the background.
If you’re burnt out, reactive, or stuck in a belief that “I have to do it all,” that energy seeps into how you manage others. If you avoid conflict, your team avoids honesty.If you operate from urgency, pressure becomes normal.

What I Learned from Building Teams
I’ve led and built seven teams, each shaped by a values-first mindset. My personal framework includes:
Self-responsibility — don’t just bring problems, bring potential solutions.
Integrity — align decisions with values, especially when it’s hard.
Permission to fail — mistakes are how we improve systems.
Fun — especially in high-stress roles, joy matters.
But I also learned something deeper. Those values only hold when the leader holds them internally. When I was aligned, the culture reflected that.When I was stretched or reactive, the culture tightened.
